Lost God: Savage souls

“School’s out!” proclaimed Alice Cooper in 1972, but what about old school? Well, in the death metal scene old school’s never out. Just ask Asphyx, Suffocation, Unleashed, Dismember etc. What about Lost God? Well, they’re from Belgium and they’re hot for the teacher at Ye Olden Academy. What grade they’re getting? Depends on what part of the teacher (me) they’re tickling. Lost God reach for the groin area but end up slamming their collective fingers into the impenetrable force field that protects my family jewels from anything but the best of the best. But they found the right region, at least!

This three-track, 12-minute demo/EP nods heavily in the direction of the ancient DM forefathers from both USA and Europe, and it actually shows promise of good things to come. We’ve got some groovy mid-tempo riffs and rapid blasting that conjure up images of sweaty mosh-pits where rotten corpses are being mutilated and bloody limbs fly all over the place. Good, sick times…

With only a trio of songs to evaluate, there’s only so much to analyze, but the pieces we’re given deliver good riffs with just the right amount of catchiness. Lost God don’t bring much new shit to the table, but they can do their dishes alright and polish the already existing hardware to a new sheen. The vocalist has a nice growl, and at times he also lets out some tasteful psycho screams. The production is quite professional, though I really hate the snare sound. “St. Anger” spooks somewhere around the corner…

Lost God are also wise enough to incorporate some interesting arrangements with clean guitars and the like, that add a fresh spice to the soup. Some elements are a bit too goofy though, like the caveman “EiiiyyyyIH! EiiiyyyyIH!” in the beginning of closer “The Black Flames of Rebellion” and the semi-spoken/semi-growled lyrics over the nice clean guitar part in the end of “Human Fear”…I like the idea but the realization limps. Hard. With a crutch. Which spells almost like crotch. I like juvenile humor. Do you?
